What Was I thinking?

My family loves dogs. We treat them like members of the family instead of pets. They stay inside, sleep on the couch, and mistakenly believe that they are lap dogs. We already have Cheyenne (a Pit-mix) and Jack (a Jack Russell Terrier) and with two small children, that’s a full load in and of itself. So what did my family do this weekend? We got a puppy!

Yep. A puppy. Her name is Gretel. One more living, breathing thing to be responsible for while Hubby is at work. No. I’m not crazy. I promise. (Well, maybe just a little.)

Boy, she sure is cute though. Even though last night, she did nothing but cry, whine, and bark. I learned that newborn children are nothing compared to a puppy the first night she is in her new home. I must admit, between my son waking up for a feeding and the puppy making noise all night, there might have been a few harsh words thrown at Hubby. (Sorry, Honey!)

I’ve never had a puppy before, so this is all new to me. I have one more day to get all of the information Hubby has in his head about them before he heads off on his latest hitch and it’s me, the kids, and the animals. It seems that my talent lies in getting in over my head. It’s going to be a steep (and sleepless) learning curve, but like always, I’ll figure it out and make it work. That’s what us oilfield wives are best at, right? And once our family adopts a new member, we don’t turn back.

In that spirit, I’ve decided to look at this new puppy as a lesson in patience and keeping my cool. I’m also looking at this as a blessing. Since I am able to stay at home, I’ll be able to work one-on-one with Gretel and bring her up to speed quickly. (Hopefully!)

  1. My dog eats underwear. And then when I yell at him for it, he pees everywhere. True story. :/
