Summer Reads

summer-reading

I love books. Ever since I can remember, bliss has been reading a good book with nothing important to do. My mom often remarks that the reason my eye sight is as bad as it is now is because of all of the reading I would do after she had told me to go to bed. I have a soft spot for all of those kids out there who still sneak a flashlight into bed with their favorite book. Go easy on them, Moms! Books can take them places video games never could.

While it is harder to get into a book with kiddos running around, I still manage to find two or three books that I just cannot put down. With vacations and time off, summer is the perfect time to catch up on a little reading (just remember to put on sunscreen before getting lost in a book poolside or on the beach!).

Here are five of my recommendations for summer reading:

1) Lost Lake by Sarah Addison Allen- I love everything that Sarah Addison Allen has written. I’m not even kidding. I’ve read every book and strongly recommend them to everyone who asks (and several who didn’t). Lost Lake is Allen’s first novel since having her cancer go into remission and I believe it to be her best work yet. If you don’t like this book, then I don’t know what is wrong with you.

2)Cousins O’Dwyer Triliogy by Nora Roberts- I am loving this series. The first book is Dark Witch and the second is Shadow Spell. The third book, Blood Magick, will be released on October 28th, 2014, so you have plenty of time to catch up on the first two.

3)The Heiresses by Sara Shepard– This is on my personal must read list. I’ve never read anything by Shepard but know of her work (Pretty Little Liars). From the description, I have a strong feeling that I’ll enjoy it.

4)We Are Called to Rise by Laura McBride- This is on my “I want to read it but I’m not sure I want to put my brain through the work out” list. It’s a book that I know will make me cry but has a solid lesson to take away. I’ve seen it recommended in a few magazines, so I thought it would fit with my recommendations.

5)The One & Only by Emily Giffin- You might know Giffin from Something Borrowed (was made into a movie), that I absolutely loved. I’m not usually disappointed by her writing so I feel pretty confident in recommending this to y’all.

*Also, don’t forget to get your kids involved in summer reading programs at your local public library! (Can y’all tell I still feel like a public library employee?)*
