Stain Recipes, Anyone?

When my oilfield man (OFM) is away on his hitch our three year old daughter always wants to sleep in bed with me. I know some of the other Mommys of the world would frown on this, but I love having our daughter sleep in bed and snuggle with me when hubby is away. I love hearing her little toddler snore and it never fails we both always seem to migrate to his side of the bed as if smelling my OFM makes him feel that much closer when we miss him so much. Although I love sharing bedtime with our daughter the one thing I absolute hate is when the little has an accident and wets the bed!

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, the children in our little oilfield families, just like their mamas, are just not the same when hubby is gone. No joke, our daughter almost never wets the bed when her Dad is home, it is so strange. I think her bedtime accidents happen more frequently when he is gone because she, like me, does not sleep as well; she misses her Daddy, she misses his comfort, she misses the feeling of protection he gives her. Our daughter is almost four, and even though she has been out of diapers since right before she turned two, she still seems to have accidents here and there, but only at bedtime, and only when my OFM is away on his hitch.

Because our daughter likes to sleep with Mama when her Daddy is away, of course her wetting of the bed occurs in our bed. As a working oilfield wife (OFW), I cannot tell you the number of mornings I have got up at 5am and already stripped my bed, scrubbed a mattress, done a load of laundry, bathed a toddler and all before I even get in the shower. Thank the good Lord for the sanitary cycle on our washing machine, but my mattress does not share the same gratitude. I know, I know, you would think I would have bought a mattress cover by now, but after this long the thought has cross my mind some days to just ignite the mattress in flames and start all over! Ha-Ha, I mean really, how do you get that smell and those stains out of a mattress?

When we bought our stupid mattress for some reason both my OFM and I were both convinced a standard mattress with about 4ins of pillow top seemed totally practical, uh wrong! What were we thinking! First of all we have a toddler, who still sleeps with me half the month every month. Second of all, that darn pillow top is like one big sponge just screaming I absorb anything! I do not even want to say what we paid for the thing, but I guarantee if I would have opted for the cheapy rock hard mattress, it probably would not have ever become a pee pad to start with, but isn’t that the luck?

A few months back we hired a local company to come and steam clean the mattress. The mattress smelled great, it was a few shades whiter, yet the lovely yellow rings resembling our three year old were still there, front and center. If you are debating having your mattress professionally cleaned like we did, I would honestly say just save your money, I mean to be totally honest it did not make that huge of a difference and well we still got the stains.

I know one day we will totally grow out of this, and honestly her accidents are becoming less  common. I am holding out on totally buying a new mattress for probably a few years still, however in the meantime I will continue washing, scrubbing, and cleaning all the collateral damage. I have read a variety of articles on DIY stain removers, and seen multiple pins on home remedies, but I NEED HELP! Use your carpet cleaner the hand held tool I cleaned the same stains out of ours that way also a mixture of equal parts vinegar baking soda and peroxide makes a really good odor killer…..We have a night time underwear rule for sleeping with momma for the exact same reason….he is 6 .

Thanks! I def will have to try that! I researched and read that vinegar can actually make the stains lock in (like they do with color on Easter eggs) so they recommend unless you know those stains will be there regardless, use the vinegar, I’ve already given up hope on the ugly stains but this is worth a try 🙂
