When the Husband is Away…

When the Husband is Away... #realoilfieldwives…The wife will play. And by play I mean re-design the entire house.

What else is a wife to do when she has 3 weeks to herself (not!)? She’d like to think she has three weeks to herself while her husband is thousands of miles away training, but reality is she still has a child, appointments, play dates, story time, family get-togethers, groceries to buy, meals to cook, and bills to pay. She’s busy, but still bored. Maybe ‘bored’ isn’t the word I’m looking for here.

I spend day after day, night after night in this house we made a home. I’m not complaining, I LOVE my life here and my home. But I live, work, and love here. I needed a change of scenery, big time (before I lost my mind). So, I took the opportunity and drowned my lonesome sorrows in 6.5 gallons of paint. What the hell was I thinking?

I figured I had all the time in the world. That it would be “relaxing” to change the world that surrounds me. That I could do something so big and bold to surprise him when he comes home (he is still training for the remainder of this week, he has not seen photos). The remodel took a total of 6 days, 6.5 gallons of paint, 4.5 rolls of painters tape, countless hours, priceless time and some very-welcomed help from my amazing family (thank you, Mom, Dad, and Cory)! Without them, it would not be done and I’d have half-colored walls.

Was it relaxing? Nope. Not even a little bit. Well, maybe a little. It surely wasn’t during the process, but now that it’s finished it is everything I wanted (and more!). It’s my Zen, my accomplishment, my latest dream…it’s my home. And I’ve made it ours for the second time since living here (the first time being when we moved in and did a ton of upgrades). It’s beautiful! I hope he thinks so too!

I learned quite a bit this last stretch of being alone:

  1. Take risks. Dream big and DO it! Want to change your world, but afraid of the outcome? DO it anyway! Afraid of that paint color? Who cares?! Buy it anyway! It’s exactly what you want…trust me.
  2. With a little creativeness and some big imagination it doesn’t have to cost as much as you think. Become an artist and a DIYer. After all, this is YOUR space, no one else’s.
  3. Chalk Paint is awesome. Seriously, find and old piece of furniture, get some wild-colored chalk paint, and re-do it! Amazing results! Like…magazine worthy results.
  4. Take it on while hubby is gone. It’s scarier because YOU are calling all the shots. He trusts you, now trust yourself. Not sure how to do something? YouTube it (there are how-to videos for virtually everything out there), go to Lowes alone, buy it, ask for advice, ask for help, but do it solo. It’ll change your world in more ways than one!
  5. Sometimes all you need is a little change of color and a new perspective. It changes everything!

Now go! Go change something you’ve been wanting to change! It’s empowering, and you’re going to love your new space and new you! Oh! And post pics! I will as soon as hubby has seen it first!
