How Do You Recharge?

How do you recharge? #realoilfieldwivesDo you ever feel that you want to run away from your life? Not permanently run out on your family or anything –but do you ever need a temporary break? As a stay-at-home oilfield wife, I don’t even know where I would go for a break, I just know I want one! School has started for my kids, along with their first semester extra curricular activities. Life is fun, hectic, full, busy and DRAINING. It’s hard to get everyone motivated and ready to go when I’m not quite up to it myself. I’d like to spend just one day in bed watching movies, at the mall, at the spa, or sitting in the sun reading a book. (Or maybe even a week at the beach, or  at Disneyland! Ahhh…now that sounds great…) But instead I have to motivate, encourage, nag, threaten (and bribe) to get everyone else up and going.

I have to maintain the schedule –including meals, baths, and bedtimes– even when I don’t feel like it. I’m in charge of arriving at all our activities on time and ready to go. I am the motivator. I have to keep going.  I spend my days schooling followed by driving kids around town to sports and activities.  In between that, I cook meals and clean house. I get great joy out of taking care of my family and I wouldn’t trade it for anything, but honestly, it does get tiresome after a while. Where can I go to unwind? I’d really like to hide from my responsibilities, even if just for a day or two.

When my Hot Oil Man is gone and I’m running the show, I can start to feel run down. Not just physically (although I do get tired), but also mentally and emotionally, too. It’s a lot for one person to maintain. I have friends and family and I also have my faith which is the biggest encouragement  I have. But honestly, even with all that support, I could really use a vacation from reality. I try my best to take time for myself even if it’s only watching 30 minutes of TV after the kids are in bed, or talking to my husband on the phone for 20 minutes before he heads off work, or Skyping with a long distance friend, but sometimes that just isn’t enough to recharge my batteries. It is enough to keep me going though, and I guess that’s all I have to do. Keep going. Keep maintaining. Keep pushing on. All the while dreaming of a vacation…..

How do the rest of you recharge while your men are gone?

About jenna

Jenna has been an oilfield wife for over 12 years. Her Hot Oil Man husband started working in the oilfield a few months before they were married. The oilfield has lead them all the way from Northern CO to Alaska, where they've lived in the Matanuska Valley for 4 years. The family consists of their two children; a strong-willed daughter age 10, and a goofy son age 7. And of course what family would be complete without a couple of dogs and rabbits thrown in the mix. Jenna is a stay at home mom who doesn't “stay at home” much, and enjoys gardening, baking, reading, watching movies, four wheeling, hiking, fishing, and LOVES shopping. Since moving to the last frontier they have also started home schooling, which is another adventure all it’s own.
